PARIKRAMA

Shaurya Singh  |  India  |  2024  |  4 mins

Samuel, a troubled teenager struggling with anxiety and depression, begins to see vivid, alternate realities that feel as real as the world he knows. At first, these visions offer him solace, a world where he feels strong, understood, and free. But as the boundaries blur, Ethan becomes trapped between two realities, unsure of what’s real and what’s a figment of his mind.

This psychological film explores the fragility of the mind and the courage it takes to face one’s inner demons.

The use of the mirror creates a dual perspective, showing both the character's back and their face indirectly. This symbolises introspection or duality in the character’s thoughts and emotions. The subject is placed off-centre, leaving space to reveal elements of the environment. This asymmetry gives a sense of imbalance or imperfection in the character’s world. The close quarters of the bathroom evokes a sense of intimacy and the character’s emotional and mental entrapment. The lighting casts strong shadows, adding depth to the frame and representing an inner conflict.

The shot employs natural framing using the tall trees in the foreground. This creates a sense of depth and draws the viewer's eyes toward the background, where the church is situated. The off-centre placement of the church within the frame adds an asymmetrical balance, evoking a subtle tension or mystery. The trees, while dominant, do not overpower the church's presence. The calm, quiet ambience evokes a sense of solitude or introspection. The viewer might associate the setting with peace, spiritual awakening, or a foreboding tension.

The shot is a close-up, emphasising the tactile connection between the character's hand and the object—a golden prayer wheel or engraved religious artefact. The tight framing suggests intimacy and focus, drawing attention to the details of the hand, bracelet, and texture of the object. The warm, golden tones dominate the frame, reflecting light off the metallic surface. This lighting evokes a sense of divinity, reverence, or enlightenment. The soft, natural glow suggests a spiritual or sacred environment. The bracelet adds vibrancy to the shot, symbolising individuality, culture, or a connection to tradition. The blue bead stands out, potentially hinting at peace or clarity amidst the warmth of the scene. The knitted, colourful sleeve adds a human and personal element, contrasting with the regal formality of the gold.

This image captures a cinematic moment reminiscent of Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, with two hands reaching towards each other in a delicate and symbolic gesture. One hand, adorned with a beaded bracelet and a multicoloured knitted sleeve, suggests individuality and an earthy connection, while the other bare hand represents simplicity and openness. The soft, warm lighting creates a cozy yet profound atmosphere, casting subtle shadows on the scene and illuminating the background. The composition feels intimate, almost like a fleeting connection between two worlds or ideologies, set within a personal and grounded environment. The contrasting elements, texture, light and focus, evoke a sense of reaching for something just beyond grasp, whether connection, understanding, or transcendence.
